Young man killed while trying to maintain peace

A young man was killed in the Morobe capital when trying to maintain peace in his community.

Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr said the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning at Three-Mile, Lae.

He said the deceased was a young community leader who confronted a drunken man who was causing nuisance and disturbance in the community.

“It is reported that the disorderly person’s relative came into the fight and attacked the young leader with a bush knife, killing him. The rest of the community came in and a fight erupted,” Wagambie Jnr said.

“Police went to the area and with the community, managed to apprehend the person who had caused the confrontation.

“The other suspect involved in the murder is in hiding and police have appealed to the relatives to assist to locate and bring him in.

“Hand him over for his own safety and also to quell the tension.”

The Lae police boss said another similar incident happened early this month at Tent City where four youths were apprehended after the death of an old man.

Wagambie Jnr said the deceased died at the hospital after initially getting punched on the chest by the youths, who were all under the influence of alcohol.

He stated that the man, from East Sepik origin, was trying to stop the drunkards from swearing and making loud noises when he was attacked.

Wagambie Jnr said alcohol abuse is a problem in PNG’s second largest city and urged parents and guardians to be supportive in their communities to maintain peace.
