Wrap up festive operations in Manus

Two reports of attempted rape cases were made to police in Manus during the New Year period.

Police say the suspect is a known prison escapee who had been on the run.

Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector said police were out in full force to ensure the New Year was celebrated peacefully however there were reported incidents which police were able to attend to.

They include a break and enter incident where a youth broke into a shop to steal. That youth has since been arrested and is in police custody.

There was also reports of unlawful wounding, discharging of firearms and two arrests made for homebrew and drug consumption.

The notable incident for the province was the escape of six remandees who are awaiting trial in the National Court.

PPC Yapu said the remandees are considered dangerous and are still on the run.

They escaped while out attending a Volley ball tournament on Sunday.

Police have appealed to the communities to assist them recapture the wanted men and warned not to harbor them.

Despite the reported incidents he thanked the people of Manus for their mutual understanding and common sense for celebrating the New Year peacefully.
