Workshop on human rights to be held

Addressing gender and human rights issues will further be strengthened following a capacity building workshop for staff at the Department for Community Development and Religion.

The workshop is scheduled from June 19-20 at the Sambra Haus, Port Moresby.

It will be hosted by the gender development and human rights branch from the Department in partnership with the UN Office of the Human Rights Commission (UNOHRC).

The two-day in house induction training will focus on international treaties, conventions obligation and documentation processes on human rights.

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), human rights adviser Kedar Poudyal, says more needs to be done to address gender and human rights in PNG.

Poudyal stressed that PNG needs to establish a national human rights commission and there’s a need for a concerted effort by all stakeholders at the national level to make this happen.

OHCHR has been engaging with Government departments, including the Department of Justice and the Department of Community Development, which play a leading role in this issue.

Other Government departments that will be also participating in this capacity building workshop include Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Justice and Attorney General, Constitutional Law Reform Commission, PM's Department and National Planning and Monitoring.
