Woman gets 4 years in jail for land sale

A woman from Kirakira village in NCD has been sentenced to 4 years in jail after she was found guilty of misappropriating K120,000.

These were monies she took for the sale of a piece of land which she never owned.

Girigi Goasa Mose made representations to the owners of JDM Ltd that she was selling land at Taurama for K150,000 in 2009.

Acting Judge Nicholas Miviri sentenced the 47-year-old mother-of-four to 4 years in jail with hard labour today after he convicted her on 12 July for misappropriating K120,000.

Mose falsely pretended to act on behalf of her family and clan to sell a piece of customary land in Taurama, known as Odahara, Portion 2763c – 2765c.

The Waigani National Court found Mose had no authority to sell the subject land, coupled with the land not specifically identified by survey grid map.

Payments of K120,000 were made however, no land title was given nor refunded to JDM Ltd for the land initially priced at K150,000.

From documents before court, acting Judge Miviri saw Mose had no means of repaying the monies and said a sentence must treat the crime committed.

He went on to say the prisoner did not take initiative in making repayments thus it would be an error to give a suspended sentence.

Mose will spend 4 years at the Bomana jail.
