Warder arrested over serious assault

A Correctional Service officer has been arrested and charged in Manus for being in possession of drugs and causing serious assault.

The 25-year-old officer appeared at the Lorengau District Court on Monday and has been allowed court bail of K400.

The case against the man from Sanaroa village, in the Esa’ala district of Milne Bay Province, was adjourned from Monday to February 20th.

The officer, currently attached with Correctional Service in Lorengau, allegedly hit a 22-year-old woman using a piece of iron rod and grass knife handle on December 31st, 2018.

Police allege he also hit the victim with it from the head down to her legs, causing serious injuries and heavily bleeding.

PPC Manus, chief Inspector David Yapu, said the suspect also allegedly forced the victim into bed at the single quarter’s accommodation in Lorengau.

The victim put up a fight and managed to escape and was taken to the hospital.

Meantime, the 26-year-old PNGDF soldier at the Lombrum Naval Base, who was arrested and charged for allegedly sexually touching a 12-year-old on 17 January 2019, has also appeared in court for mention.

His case was been further adjourned to 15 February.

He remains in custody.
