UPNG celebrates Media Freedom Day

Keeping power in check; Media, Justice and the Rule of Law is the theme for this year's World Media Freedom Day.

The 25th celebration was held at the University of Papua New Guinea, by the Creative Arts and Journalism and Public Relations strands of the Melanesian Institute of Arts and Communication, to recognise the work of the media.

Indeed today is the day to recognise the work of journalists around the world, members of the press including their Editors, Public Relations practitioners as well as journalism students gathered in Port Moresby today to celebrate the occasion.

Journalism students set up expo booths showcasing the work they produced at the university with the little resources and equipment that the school has.

In acknowledging the role media plays in development, Secretary of PNG Media Council, Belinda Kora, says more needs to be done.

Reporting the facts in the face of any uncertainty, intimidation or physical threat is what it takes to keep power in check - a challenge that the Papua New Guinea media faces each day in every newsroom.

"And it is through the commitment of hard working, fearless journalists, freely practicing the craft that the people can ask the hard questions to those in authority. Their cause is just; and while their tools have changed, the basic rules of upholding media freedom will stand the test of time."

She said development in technology, especially with the use of social media, has unfortunately amplified the catch-all "Fakenews" by people who would not have a free and critical media, reporting nothing but the truth.

“We firmly believe that the only check on power is holding truth to its functions, its motives; and to ensure that justice served is truly and rightfully delivered. We the media are in the business of truth.”
