Two petitions filed against Parkop

Two petitions that were filed against NCD Governor, Powes Parkop yesterday went for directions hearing in the Court of Disputed Returns.

Runner-up Michael Kandiu and former top cop, Andy Bawa both filed petitions, disputing Governor Parkop’s win.

In the petition filed by Kandiu, the former NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Ben Turi and former Assistant Returning Officer in the NCD Regional seat, Bale Kavanamur, amongst others have been summoned to give evidence in the trial.

Kandiu is alleging errors and omission during the scrutiny process and illegal practices against Parkop.

The Electoral Commission has been ordered to produce a list of presiding officers in the 360 polling booths, Presiding officers journals, tally sheets and the total figure of exclusion #35 in the NCD Regional seat.

Governor Parkop’s lawyers have filed an objection, challenging the competency of this petition.

In the petition filed by Bawa on September 13, the Governor’s lawyers told court they are yet to file an objection.

Both petitions return to court next month for pre-trial conference.
