Transparency International invites PM to meet

Transparency International has invited Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to meet with visiting Global Chairman José Ugaz (Hose Yugaz).

This invite could not have been more perfectly timed, as the Prime Minister may be called to answer to pending allegations in reference to fraud and corruption.

The invite was announced this morning at the TIPNG and the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce breakfast – where TIPNG chairman Lawrence Stephen says it was not engineered to intimidate, especially at a time when focus should be placed on individuals who are being appointed to positions when they have dubious public records.

Stephens said they have attempted to make contact with the Prime Minister to see whether he can meet with TIPNG however, they are still waiting for his response.

A rather hefty comment was made by the head of the leading anti-corruption organisation, José Ugaz.

He said there are specific cases where he will exercise caution, for instance, the picture of the head of Global TI and a corrupt president or leader standing together is not a good sight.

However, he stated that if there is a need for constructive discussions to address the growing length of corruption in the briefest way possible, then it is an opportunity that cannot be missed.

Now it is only a question of how this announcement will turn out.
