Total liquor ban in North Fly

The North Fly District in Western Province has imposed a complete ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the district.

This is among a number of resolutions passed by the North Fly District Development Authority board in their recent inaugural meeting in Kiunga.

The complete ban on liquor or alcohol throughout the district is among other big decisions, including tying up of all oil and gas projects from the district into a standalone Western LNG with facilities built in Daru.

Local MP and DDA chairman, James Donald, said the main reason behind the liquor ban was due to a high rate of alcohol related crimes, family and children abuse, high rate of alcohol related killings and deaths, high rate of irresponsible drinking in settlements and public places, high rate of disorder and mismanagement by recipients of monies or payouts from Ok Tedi such as compo and other related social issues.

Donald said if his North Fly people want change then these are the types of changes he will be bringing, apart from high hopes of bigger infrastructure development projects that they may expect.

“In order for us to develop North Fly and Western Province, we must firstly change ourselves and get ourselves in order, ensuring that our women and children are safe and sound,” Donald said.

He stated that North Fly has missed out on a lot for the past 36 years because of their own complete ignorance and heavy reliance on free handouts from Ok Tedi.

Donald further said his people can expect more tough decisions in the near future to put the district in order.
