Student arrested in spear killing

A 20-year-old man has been arrested by police in Manus in relation to the killing of another man last Friday at Bundrahei village, Pobuma LLG, in the south coast of Manus.

Police say the man is a Grade 10 student and was arrested and charged with wilful murder yesterday.

Elizah Sipayau (20) of Bundrahei village will appear at the Lorengau District Court tomorrow (Wednesday) over allegations he killed Allan Damien, 23, from Likum village.

Manus Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, says the incident occurred over betelnut theft at a block between Bundrahei and Likum villages.

It is alleged a fight took place between the two where Sipayau ran into his house and picked up a hunting spear.

“The suspect (now accused) saw the deceased walking and came out from the bush and speared the deceased on the left side of his chest. The spear penetrated through the deceased man’s heart and caused his instant death,” Yapu says.

Sipayau later surrendered to Police.

PPC Yapu says the suspect has been dealt with by police and is asking for calm and peace from the deceased’s relatives, appealing to them not to take the law into their hands.

The deceased’s body is now in the Manus Provincial Hospital for autopsy.
