Scientist in PNG to discuss climate change

Climate change is a global catastrophe and according to scientists, we are well into the period of profound damage.

Internationally-acclaimed scientist, Professor Tim Flannery, is currently in the country, providing in-depth overview of climate change and initiatives PNG can embark on.

Human influence through carbon emissions is the biggest contributor to climate change worldwide.

According to Professor Flannery, China and USA are the biggest emitters.

However, climate change is a global issue and PNG, like other countries, is obliged to join the global community combat it.

Damage to coral reefs, biodiversity and threat to food security are some of the effects of climate change.

Scientists have projected that rice and wheat, marine species, especially fish, and other food sources, will be affected immensely by climate change.

Professor Flannery offered workable solutions for PNG to fight climate change, such as planting trees and using clean renewable energy and technology.
