Schools instructed to implement new curriculum

Elementary schools throughout the country are instructed to implement the new Standards-Based Curriculum (SBC) at the start of the 2017 academic year.

SBC learning kits are now being delivered to 7,000 elementary schools across the country.

Minister for Education, Nick Kuman, is calling on all divisions of the Department, including stakeholders, to support the curriculum reform.

Kuman said standards need to be set to allow SBC to move forward.

The change must start from the department, then to the regions, provinces, districts and schools.

Kuman highlighted that SBC is not the business of the curriculum and teacher education divisions only, but it is for everyone, both at the national, provincial and school level.

“Our collective effort in seeing the implementation is required so that we can see good results in the future,” he said.

“The success of implementing SBC depends on the teachers’ ability to teach it at the school level.

“Since the teachers are trained to teach SBC, we expect to see advancement of standards at the elementary level.”

All schools kick started the academic year yesterday (Jan 30).
