Refugee arrested over sexual assault of 10 year old

Another refugee in Manus has been arrested for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl (identity withheld due to age) at the Kohai Lodge, at Ward 2 in Lorengau Town.

Acting Provincial Police Commander senior inspector David Yapu told Loop PNG that the accused, 28 year-old Muhammad Hussain of Pakistan was formally arrested on Monday.

He was charged with four counts of sexual penetration, under section 229(a) of the Criminal Code Act and Sexual offense and Crimes against Children’s Act.

PPC Yapu said the defendant invited the victim and two others to the lodge where she was violated.

Hussain is expected to appear in court this Wednesday for mention.

This is the second incident of sexual assault at Lorengau Town involving a refugee and a frustrated PPC Yapu said what was done to the victim is unrespectable and is a disgrace to the girl, the community and the society.

In January, 31-year-old Asylum Seeker, Rajeev Rajendran was arrested and charged for the assault of a grade 9 student on January 17 at the Harbourside Hotel.

He is on bail of K2,000 and police are still working on producing a hand-up brief for his case in court.
