REDD+ Strategy to be submitted to NEC this month

The Climate Change and Development Authority is aiming to have the National REDD+ Strategy ready for submission to the National Executive Council for endorsement later this month.

PNG is currently in the process of developing REDD+ for the country under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and in accordance with the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The National REDD+ Strategy was the main focus of discussions and training sessions at a workshop this week in Kavieng attended by 60 representatives from the government and private sector.

The outcomes from the workshop will be in a revised document that will help provide clear direction on how PNG can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

CCDA general manager for REDD+ and mitigation division Gwen Sissiou said PNG will do REDD+ through a series of Government lead policies and measures coordinated at the national level.

Sissiou said they will now discuss and agree upon the proposed REDD+ policies and measures that will work effectively in PNG.

She said REDD+ discussions and training sessions are part of the ongoing stakeholder consultation process coordinated by CCDA with support from UN Development Program.

The aim is to ensure all stakeholders that will play a role in implementing REDD+ have an opportunity to contribute meaningfully into the development of the National REDD+ Strategy.
