Prisoners are humans too: DPM

Prisoners are humans like us. They deserve love and happiness too.

Deputy Prime Minister and Lae MP, John Rosso, made this statement when reflecting on his recent visit to the Buimo correctional facility.

On Thursday, December 22nd, he brought Christmas gifts for over 830 inmates, 130 CS officers and their families, including food, sports equipment, musical instruments for the prison band and bicycles for the inmates’ children.

“It has been a tradition for me,” he said. “Otherwise, you can be criticised for spending a bit of time with the prisoners.

“They are humans like us and they deserve a little bit of reflection during Christmas day so I took time out to mingle with them.”

“I should say, I enjoyed it.”

Rosso further spoke of Lae City’s first ever ‘Carols under the stars’, which was hosted at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium on the evenings of December 22nd and 23rd.

“It’s the first time Lae has hosted Christmas carols in the evening,” he stated.

“I was very satisfied to see a lot of young children, a lot of parents come out to enjoy the event, which was hosted by churches with the backing of the Lae City Authority and my office.

“Next year will be a bigger, better year and I’d like to wish everyone a merry Christmas.”
