PNGDF launches leadership framework

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) launched its first ever leadership framework package yesterday.

The Kumul Leadership Framework package is specially written and designed by a PNGDF officer, Lt-Colonel Dickers Esso, with the help from the New Zealand Defence Force.

The leadership package will now be used to coach, train and mentor soldiers and officers of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force to become great leaders in their respective units.

It was officially launched by PNGDF Commander, Brigadier-General Gilbert Toropo, at the end of the 2017 Commanders End of Year retreat at the Kokoda Trail Motel up at Sogeri.

Brigadier-General Toropo said it has been the Force’s intent to develop and foster strong leadership in all ranks of the PNGDF.

“We need this to grow the organisation and to execute our mission, to defend Papua New Guinea, its people and interests to the highest standard.”

The framework is a group of behaviour statements that will form the backbone of leadership development in the PNGDF.

A leadership workshop was conducted back in 2015 which saw senior leaders across the PNGDF organisation agree to adopt and develop a leadership framework to grow ethical leaders.

The introduction of the Kumul Leadership Framework and the establishment of the Leadership Directorate will be an important step in implementing this commitment.

The launch of the framework was officiated by the Chief Sectary to government, Isaac Lupari.
