PNGDF boasts its own brass band

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force now has its very own brass band team of trained army personnel.

Currently still in training, the band consists of 33 males and 8 females who have been training at the PNGDF Goldie Barracks, outside Port Moresby.

The band members kickstarted the first phase of their training early this year in January through to March.

They carried on to complete the second phase in September and just recently started the third and final phase of band training, which will end in March 2018.

Three band members are currently in Japan to attend a conductor’s course.

A retired army colonel from the Japan Defence Force is currently in the country to train them under the Japan International Cooperation Agency agreement.

According to Captain Raphael Oa of the PNGDF, the band is also working and training towards taking part in the 2018 APEC Summit.

They are expected to perform during the closing ceremony for the first time since their training.
