PNG traffic rules to be upgraded

The Road Traffic Authority is in the process of upgrading all traffic rules in the country.

The new rules will come into effect on June 1st, 2018.

Among the new rules is the increased fee for obtaining vehicle licence.

In accordance with section 65 of the Road Traffic Act 2014, the Road Traffic Authority took over all the functions of the Land Transport Board, the National Road Safety Council and the Superintendent of Motor Traffic, under the Motor Traffic Act and Regulation, and the Licensing of Heavy Vehicles Act and Regulation, from commencement of the Road Act in September 2014.

The Road Traffic Act provides for new regulations and rules to be made under the Act.

Gazetted notices have now been published for the following regulations and rules to come into effect on 1st June.

Among the rules is the Road Traffic Rules for Licencing of Drivers 2017.

The legislation change will see increased fees for licences as well as increased penalties for traffic offences.

The new regulations and rules will replace the

  • Land Transport Board Act 1968
  • Motor Traffic Act 1950
  • Motor Traffic Regulation 1967
  • Licensing of Heavy Vehicles Act 1977 and
  • Licencing of Heavy Vehicles Regulations 1977

As a result of this change in legislation, driver’s licences and other documents will be changed to comply with the new requirements.

The new regulations, rules, fees, offences and penalties and information on applying for licences, permits, approvals and others are available on the Road Traffic Authority website.
