PNG delegation to visit Russia

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill will lead a Government and business delegation to Russia later this year following an official invitation from the government of Russia.

The invitation was made by Russia’s Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, during bilateral discussions at the APEC Leaders’ Summit in Port Moresby last November.

During his recent visit to China, the Prime Minister discussed the visit with Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin.

The visit will take place with a focus on opportunities in the global LNG sector.

O’Neill clarified that while there has not been much exchange with Russia in the past, this has been growing in recent years, particularly since Papua New Guinea’s emergence in the LNG sector.

He also said there are industry synergies and investment opportunities that can be discussed, and Russia has extensive technical experience in gas production and opportunities for PNG businesses.

O’Neill explained that as PNG expands its agricultural exports, there are opportunities to explore in Eastern Russia, and there have also been an increase in Russian tourists coming to Papua New Guinea.

O’Neill believes PNG should continue to expand its horizons for trade and investment that will lead to further job creation, and he looks forward to expanding PNG’s engagement with Russia.
