PM stresses on provincial empowerment

Frustrations in the lack of service delivery is one reason why autonomy should be given to provinces.

This statement by Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, who is in New Ireland Province for the opening of the Namatanai Government House, was met with loud applause.

The PM and his delegation of Government ministers were received with much fanfare in Namatanai this morning.

The subject that dominated all speeches was autonomy.

PM O'Neill said New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan never failed to broach the subject of provincial empowerment at every opportunity.

"I want you to know that you have a believer in me," stated the PM.

"District development authority was introduced precisely to address these frustrations; frustrations in the lack of services in the remotest parts of our country.

"We thought that controlling everything in Waigani was the solution to managing our country when in fact, it is not.

"Waigani cannot micromanage our country. That is why empowering our provinces, empowering our districts, is the way to go."

PM O'Neill further assured Governor Sir Julius and East New Britain Governor, Nakikus Konga, of his support.

The delegation is now travelling to Kavieng town for the opening of the Kavieng Government House tomorrow.
