One dead, others injured in Manus accident

One person is dead and others seriously injured in a road accident that occurred this morning on Red hill, near Salasia along the Lorengau- Momote road in Manus.

Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu said the driver of the utility vehicle was a refugee, who was believed to have been driving without a license.

Four people, including two local women and another refugee were onboard the vehicle when it skidded and overturned near Salasia between 5 and 6 am.  

The driver sustained a fractured shoulder while one of the female passengers who sustained internal injuries passed away at the Lorengau General Hospital at 1pm today.

PPC Yapu suspects the accident was a result of drink-driving. He is warning driver to take extra care when driving due to rainy season and bad weather pattern currently experienced in the province.

Police will deal with the driver once he is discharged from hospital.

Meantime a driver of Palading Security Bus from East New Britain Province involved in the accident along Lorengau/ Momote road on May 31st appeared in Lorengau District court on June 8.

He was found Guilty, Convicted and fine K400 by the court.
