Observe importance of World Environment Day: Kombra

The Secretary for Education, Dr. Uke Kombra, is calling on all schools under the National Education System to observe the importance of World Environment Day on June 5.

Dr Kombra said the National Executive Council has approved an extra day on June 6 for this campaign, thus schools are being urged to fully utilise both days and drive the key message to students.

The United Nations’ endorsed theme for World Environment Day 2018 is “Beating plastic pollution”, and all schools throughout the country are asked to come up with local themes in line with the international theme.

Dr. Kombra outlined the effects of climate change, adding events like this remind us about the need to look after and protect our environment for the good of human lives in the long run.

Elaborating on the theme, Dr. Kombra stressed that knowledge gained through school programs and activities like reading, writing, speaking and outdoor activities like tree planting can make an impact on an educated literate society and this can help improve in the way we look after our environment.

He further challenged schools nationwide to embrace the environment as it forms the basis for an individual’s existence on earth.
