O’Neill extends APEC invite to MSG leaders

PNG Prime Minister and Chair of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, Peter O’Neill, has extended an invitation to leaders of the MSG to attend the APEC Summit in November.

PNG is the only MSG country who is an APEC member, and using its power as host to invite its Melanesian brothers to have the opportunity of meeting world leaders.

In his briefing as Chair on key decisions of the MSG leaders retreat, O’Neill said Papua New Guinea is the only developing Pacific Island member of APEC, and it will continue to present the views of the Pacific in the Asia-Pacific.

Hence O’Neill said PNG has a very strong commitment to share the benefits of hosting APEC with Pacific Island nations.

“As 2018 APEC Chair I have invited leaders from the Pacific to join the dialogue with APEC leaders. That will be done, and it is a unique opportunity,” stated O’Neill.

“The APEC agenda provides great opportunity for Pacific Island nations.”

He added that for PNG, it’s important that it increased the Pacific’s presence in the Asian region.

The invitation was appreciated by the MSG leaders.

Meantime, the 21st MSG Leaders retreat concluded with the signing of communiqué in Port Moresby yesterday (Feb 14) afternoon.
