New curriculum for PNG schools

There are plans to introduce a new curriculum in the country after the Standard Based Education curriculum in 2021.

A curriculum that will have to go before Cabinet for approval, Education Minister Nick Kuman says STEM curriculum will be introduced in the education system after 2020 with English as the language of instruction.

Just when the SBE curriculum is being implemented in all public schools in the country after the failed Outcome Based Education was abolished, a new curriculum, called STEM, will be introduced after 2020.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Education Minister Nick Kuman announced that the new curriculum structure will be introduced in 2021, after it goes before cabinet.

“After 2020, we will have a new curriculum structure in the country, implemented after the Standard Based Education…And we will include the technology and engineering component in 2021 onwards.”

Kuman announced this after visiting the Butuka Academy in Port Moresby, which has all facilities to implement such curriculum.

“And this is the way forward for this country, so we must make sure that we equip our students in the major subjects such as science, technology, engineering, to be taught at the school system right up till Grade 12 so that we know that they are prepared to go into the tertiary institution.”

The minister says in order to achieve the Universal Education benchmark by 2020, the country needs to include STEM as the next curriculum, starting with the secondary level.
