New compulsory subject for 2019

The year 2019 will be centered on the theme of “Christian and Values Education for a Better Future” for the Education Department.

Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said the theme was chosen to give prominence to the newly introduced Citizenship and Christian Values Education (CCVE) curriculum, which has been made a compulsory subject from 2019 onwards.

Violence, be it physical, emotional or verbal, must be addressed in society and educating the young now can make a difference.

Dr Kombra, in announcing important dates for the 2019 education calendar, said the inclusion of the Citizenship and Christian Values Education subject will be done in the hope to address the issues of gender-based violence (GBV), sorcery-related accusations and violence and many other law and order and behavioural issues affecting children. This also includes school fights which has become prevalent.

Apart from the CCVE curriculum, phonics will also be looked at to be introduced in elementary schools as a compulsory subject, and a child must be able to read, write and do simple mathematics functions before progressing to Grade One.

Teachers will officially resume duties on Monday, January 21, 2019 and students will resume classes a week later on Monday, January, 28, 2019.

Term one will have 11 teaching weeks, terms two and three 10 weeks, while term four, 11 weeks.

All certificate examinations will take place in the month of October, while the Written Expression Examinations for grades 10 and 12 will be on June 5 and August 6 respectively.
