NCDC plans to establish various waste treatment facilities

The National Capital District Commission is planning to establish waste treatment facilities to improve waste collection.

These are included in its NCD Waste Management Plan 2016-2025 that was launched today in Port Moresby.

At the moment all solid waste collected from households and industries are dumped at the Baruni land fill.

NCDC waste management division manager, Joshua Sam said in the plan, they’re proposing to set up facilities for recycling, composting and incineration.

Sam explained that they plan to transform the Baruni land fill into a one stop shop where all the wastes facilities will be set up to treat the solid wastes.

He said this will also serve as an education site where residents can see what happens to their wastes.

“We aim to minimize the amount of waste entering the Baruni landfill and improve recycling and resource recovery,” Sam said.

NCDC plans to set up a composting facility to tackle all organic wastes that is produced in the city.

Towards the end of the 10-year period, NCDC is also planning to establish an incineration facility for the city to burn the waste and convert into electricity.

“The plan is a big achievement being the first of its kind in the country.

“The NCDC waste management division is happy to share its experience with the country and throughout the provinces so they can come up with their own waste management plans,” Sam said

Sam added that as the country progresses, waste will become an issue and provinces need to know how to manage their wastes.
