NASA members at UPNG to withdraw from teaching

The National Academic Staff Association has decided on its course of action in pursuit of the 7.5 percent pay increment.

President for NASA, Emmanuel Gorea made it clear to media in a press conference that NASA has not been bought off and that he and his executive stand accountable to that accusation with reservation and great disappointment.

“Members of NASA have not been bought nor sold out and NASA has always set the agenda in the fight on pay fixation.

Gorea says since day one, NASA has refused to be militant and overtly confrontational.

He adds that NASA has had continues meetings with the UPNG Management on the issue as well as Industrial Registrar and the Department of Higher Education including the Minister of which there hasn’t been any positive feedback.

“Our strategies of negotiation and dialogue have all been exhausted,” Gorea says.

NASA members had proposed three propositions to advance the matter further to have our legal entitlements paid.

Out of the three propositions, this is the voluntary withdrawal of teaching and assessment component of work.

This will require members to protest by the voluntary withdrawal from teaching and assessment.

All other task of student consultation, researching, administrative duties, meetings and other university work will remain intact and staff will be at their place of work to undertake these.

Gorea says this will go on for five days starting next week Monday.

The outcome of this proposition is to ensure that the university settles the 7.5 now or give specific guarantees on when exactly the 7.5 percent will be settled.
