Namaliu’s lawyer files bail application

An application that will be asking the Waigani National Court for bail has been filed by lawyer representing the man who was arrested and charged over the murder of the late Ruby-Anne Laufa.

Richard Jason Magiau Namaliu, from the East New Britain Province, was arrested by police on the evening of July 25. He was charged with murder.

It is alleged he was responsible for the death of the late former Miss South Pacific, who tragically passed away on Saturday, February 11.

The charge is one which bail will have to be sought from the National Court, as the District Court and police do not have the power to allow bail.

This newsroom confirmed with the Waigani National court that bail has been filed.

It will be heard in court once it is listed before a judge.

Namaliu remains in police custody in the meantime.

His arrest is the start of the committal court process. He is expected to appear at the District Court soon, where his charge will be read and explained to him.

Police will have four months to investigate and produce an investigation file, before the Committal Court can make a ruling as to whether there is enough evidence to have the case go for trial in the National Court.
