More opportunities for students

Over the years, students who have met university requirements for entry into universities have missed out, but this will be a thing of the past.

Member for Yangoru-Saussia and Minister for International Trade and Investment, Richard Maru represented the Yangoru-Saussia District Development Authority (YSDDA) yesterday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the University of PNG to bring quality education to his people.

The signing paves way for the set-up of Open College campus in the district.

Present at the signing was UPNG’s Vice Chancellor Professor Frank Griffin, Acting Associate Director -Centre & Student Support Jessica Wohiemani, Executive Director - Open College Dr Boe Lahui Ako and Acting Registrar Roboam Kakap.

“Quality education is expensive and we are determined to provide such a provision of quality education in our district.

“Our students who missed out on quality university education and those graduating now without placement at UPNG will now receive the same education their colleagues get at UPNG here at their doorsteps,” Maru said.

He said the time has come for university education to be more accessible and affordable to the communities.

Maru stated, “It is my intension to make that happen for my people and I appreciate the University of PNG for the decision to bring university education to the people. With the advent in technology, the information superhighway and internet technology.”

He has encouraged the people of Yangoru-Saussia to take this opportunity and make that dream for university education come true.

“This is for you as I believe on quality judgements and informed decisions for development aspirations you have.

“I welcome the UPNG initiative to provide IT-based education and that should be possible immediately so that programs, lectures, and tutorials offered on the main campus must be available also in open campuses.”

Maru thanked the University administration for partnering with the YSDDA to deliver quality university education, thus providing an opportunity for the local people.
