Mobile users have 12 months to register

The compulsory mobile SIM card registration for all users in the country is being carried out by the three telecommunication operators.

National Information and Communication Technology Authority (NICTA) CEO, Charles Punaha, said the compulsory registration will end at the end of this year.

“The countdown is running, we have 12 months left, (and) we are in constant dialogue with service providers to update us on the number of people that they have registered,” he said.

“We remind subscribers that the number of days has been reduced, and we have 12 months left and they must register now.

“We are happy with the process and will complete it in the remaining 12 months.”

He added that the three mobile phone operators provide reports of their progress on a monthly basis.

“We can advise you that bmobile have completed most of their customers’ (registration), Telikom is also in the process of migrating from CMDA to 4G (and) in the process, they are changing the handsets and SIM (cards), they are also registering and most of their customers had already been registered,” Punaha said.

“The only delay is with Digicel. The delay is attributed to them selecting an equipment vendor    because they want to set up a totally new system, and from indications from Digicel, they should complete the registration by June 2017.”
