Medical school not given prominence: Staff

Academics at the University of Papua New Guinea School of Medicine and Health Sciences are calling on the Government to quickly address their grievances.

The 30 academics stopped work yesterday and have given the Government one week to respond to their grievances.

The protest is due to the delay in backdated awards; the awards payment of over K5.6 million dates back to January 1, 2014.

Lecturer Dr Pauline Wake, on behalf of the academic staff, said they feel that the medical school is not a priority for the Government.

Wake explained that they have taken this action to get the Government’s attention as well as to show that they play a significant role in the development of this country.

A few meetings will take place this week and they will see what will eventuate from that before taking the next step.

The UPNG and SMHS administrations and the PNG National Doctors Association (PNG NDA) are in support of their stand and move to stop work.

PNG NDA President Dr. James Naipao says if nothing is done to address the issue, NDA will take the matter to court in February.

The academics have also sought legal advice from the Industrial Registrar over the last couple of months.
