Manus fire update: Funds needed to move remains

Police in Manus are negotiating with the Chinese embassy to have the remains of the 10 nationals who died in the fire last month, repatriated to their country of origin.

Manus Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector, David Yapu, says at this stage, the remains of the 10 are still at the Lorenagu morgue.

He says the bodies will be taken overseas for DNA test as we do not have the facility in PNG.

Two suspects were taken in for questioning over the province’s worst fire disaster that occurred in the early hours of September 22.

Both suspects were released pending further investigations and PPC Yapu is appealing to the people of Manus to assist them and come forward to provide further information on the incident.

Meantime, the PPC is pleased with investigations so far, but is being tightlipped on new evidence in their investigation due to the sensitivity of the case.

“We want to see a water tight case with hard and credible evidences to be presented in court of law with Death Penalty,” he says.

Yapu being a former CID boss with CID background for a number of years has also been providing sound advice to the team in line of their investigation.

“The team has returned back to Port Moresby on Wednesday to analyse their findings and will return back to Manus Province.

“No stones will be left behind unturned. Those perpetrators implicated will be dealt accordingly and face full force of the law,” Yapu says.
