LLG elections set

The Local Level Government will not be deferred and will run in August in this year.

Minister for Provincial Affairs and Inter-Government Relations, Kevin Isifu, announced this today in Port Moresby.

Isifu also clarified the election of the LLG Presidents.

Under the 2018 Budget the National Government has budgeted K100 million to conduct the LLG Elections.

Minister Isifu said despite the challenges the country is currently facing, the Government will find the money to host the elections.

“This decision has been taken in the best interest of the people. The Local-Level Government is the Government close to the people.  Therefore the Government is committed to facilitate the process for the people to elect their leaders. WE will find the best possible way to conduct the elections within our financial means,” he said.

Minister Isifu admitted that it has gone past the prescribed time, however they are determined to host the elections.

The Minister also clarified the election of LLG Presidents to be done by Ward Members.

“Ward members will elect their LLG Presidents in their respective legislative assemblies, The elections for the Ward Members in the 2018 LLG elections will be conducted using the Limited Preferential Voting (LPV) System.”

Revised dates will be announced at a later date once Minister Isifu has consulted with the Electoral Commissioner.

Meanwhile the Minister stated that over K70 million in outstanding salaried to Ward Members was also a priority which the Government was committed to settling.
