Lae police assure public, firms of planned safety operations

Business houses and the public in Lae have been assured that police have planned operations to cater for their safety, despite limited resources and manpower.

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said this while denying there was a string of robberies that took place last Monday.

He said robberies on business houses were well planned, with insiders giving information for a clean getaway.

“I want to assure the public that we (Police) have coordinated and planned operations in place to cater for the public and business houses,” Wagambie Jr said.

He said despite the 370 police personnel under his command – which cannot cater for the city’s population – his men and women, though under immense pressure, are doing their best to maintain law and order.

He called on companies doing banking to contact Police so that their patrol units can keep a lookout for them while their contracted security firm handles the transfers.

“My Police personnel have been working very hard to ensure safety on the streets as well as providing security at Unitech,” Wagambie Jr added.

His command has submitted reports six months ago to the local Member of Parliament and also to the Provincial Government regarding enhancing of Police services in Lae.

“I ask the good Member to take this up with the Tutumang so that housing, resources such as fuel, vehicles, better working environment such as upgrading police station and so forth, can be looked into,” the Met Supt said.

Wagambie Jnr will also meet with the Lae Chamber of Commerce to see how the business community can come in and help.

“Law and order is everyone’s business and we need to have our own input to help minimise crime,” Wagambie Jr says.
