Lae Police arrest 107 during Easter operations

Lae police command made 107 arrests during the Easter holiday in the Morobe capital.

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr said most of the people arrested were because of alcohol related offences.

“I commend my personnel who worked double shifts throughout the long weekend to ensure public safety was maintained.”

Wagambie Jnr said random road blocks conducted at night were aided by the kind donation of portable blue lights by Lae based companies Niugini Electrical and NFC Freighters.

“The road blocks at night also found that there were a lot of defective vehicles moving around and also a number of unlicensed drivers were arrested and charged.

“Seventeen PMV buses and three private vehicles were impounded over the weekend at the Traffic Registry and the driver and owners arrested and charged.

“Foot beat patrols were conducted at hotspots (areas) in the city, mainly settlements and shopping centre at Eriku and the Main Market.

“A large number of people were detained for alcohol related offences.

“The Police cells were filled to capacity.

“Also 81 various complaints were registered with Police and a total of 107 arrests were made,” Wagambie Jnr said.

Meanwhile, there was a special Court sitting on Monday presided by Senior Provincial Magistrate Pious Tapil to clear out the Police cells.

The Lae police boss said no major crime incident was reported.
