Kokoda Track reopened

The historic Kokoda Track was reopened on Thursday February 22nd after been shut for 2 weeks.

The track was shut down by angry villagers along the track over issues of development and spin-off benefits.

For the last 2 weeks, Koiari villagers along the Kokoda Track have been camping at Depo village, the gateway of the track.

The track has been a tourism product for over 2 decades, attracting international and local tourists but villagers say there is nothing to show for.

Locals add there hasn’t been any improvement in their standard of living and health and education services are still lacking.

“We want development along the track that we have been missing out on” said one villager, Minji Yorea.

The actions of the locals prompted political intervention by Central Province Governor, Robert Agarobe, and Minister for Environment and Conservation, John Pundari.

A brief consultation on Thursday afternoon between Governor Agarobe and the villagers saw a couple of agreements reached.

“People have agreed to do a review of everything along the track. That includes reviewing the Kokoda Track Authority” said Governor Agarobe.

The review will be completed after 3 months and will capture development plans and stimulate economic activities along the track for the benefit of the villagers.
