Juffa to table syndicate reports

Northern Governor Gary Juffa says he will be tabling in parliament reports of the alleged Bangladesh syndicate operating in Papua New Guinea.

Juffa revealed this during an opposition media conference on Tuesday.

The tabling of the reports follows on from reports he received as well as investigations conducted by himself into the alleged syndicate operating in PNG, which he claims has proliferated in the province.

Juffa claims that the syndicate has been colluding with the Labour Department to bring in foreigners on illegal work permits when they have not passed an English proficient test, a key criteria before a work permit is issued.

He raised the issue in Parliament last week in which Labour Minister, Benjamin Poponawa, said he was unaware of the alleged syndicate.

Yesterday, Labour Secretary Mary Morola took out a paid advertorial announcing that she was also unaware of such a syndicate operating in the country, especially in Oro.

She said whilst the claims were noted, any involvement by Labour officers with the alleged Bangladesh syndicate must be substantiated with factual information, so the officers can be dealt with accordingly.

Juffa found it surprising that Morola and Poponawa did not know or have any information about the syndicate.

“This is strange that a Minister and a senior Government bureaucrat have no knowledge of           what is happening in their own country when the common man and woman, every person, whether they’re illiterate living in the settlement in the village or they’re educated, they all know what is happening.

“In fact, I have evidence right here of what is happening. There is a report that was given to them about this syndicate that I raised that it was stealing jobs in Papua New Guinea,” said Juffa.

“I have further two reports, which I produced myself and copies of all the work permits, copies of all the visas that were unlawfully granted by the Labour Department.

“And I did this myself, I even interviewed the persons myself I even conducted the inspection myself. And I have video footage and evidence of this so it’s strange that the Labour Minister and the Secretary have no idea about this,” he added.

Juffa says he will table the report in Parliament this week.
