Judge Tribunal to commence

A tribunal is expected to commence today at the Waigani National and Supreme Court buildings for senior judge, Justice Sir Bernard Sakora.

The Judicial and Legal Services Commission, announced that the Tribunal has been set up to investigate and report to the JLSC, if Justice Sir Bernard Sakora should be removed from the Office of a Judge.

The subject matter of investigation is delayed judgments in cases heard and reserved for decisions.

The decision to appoint the Tribunal was made by the JLSC under the chairmanship of the outgoing Attorney General Mr Ano Pala and could not be effected before he left office.

The appointment of the Tribunal by the Judicial and Legal Service Commission, will investigate matters refereed to the Commission to determine whether there are good grounds for removing Justice Sir Bernard Sakora from his office.

A former judge of the Court of Appeal and High Court of New Zealand, Justice Sir Bruce Robertson was sworn into office last Friday as Chairman of the Tribunal.

He will be assisted by Goroka residential judge, Justice William Neill, and Kavieng residential judge, Justice Lawrence Kangwia.

The JLSC also announced that Justice Sakora’s suspension from his duties as a Judge of the National and Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea took effect on Tuesday, 15th August.

The suspension is until the JLSC conveys its decision to him after receipt of the report from the Tribunal.

Meanwhile, Justice Sakora has already been served with the Notice of Appointment of Tribunal and Notice of Suspension from Duties.
