JS Sazanami visit promotes PNG-Japan friendship

The Japan’s Martime Self-defense Force Destroyer Vessel, Sazanami arrived in Port Moresby on Thursday (20th September) for a three-day goodwill visit.

The ship was welcomed by the PNGDF Military Band before a tour of the ship was given to VIPs and the media.

The JS Sazanami will depart Port Moresby on Saturday.

JS Sazanami arrived this morning for a three-day friendship and goodwill call at Port Moresby, where the crew was welcomed by the PNGDF Military Band.

The band was trained in the past two years, by JICA music experts and the Japan ground self-defense force music training.

Sazanami means ripples of wave in Japanese, and this is its first visit to PNG after it’s commissioned in 2005.

Before coming to PNG, Sazanami participated in the multi-national naval exercise “Kakadu 2018” off Darwin, Australia.

The crew paid homage to the war dead, at the Remembrance memorial park, and will also visit several places in Port Moresby to see preparations for the APEC leaders’ meeting in November.

Sazanami departed Japan in August.  It will visit Honiara in the Solomon Islands before sailing back to Japan in October.
