Guards injured in armed Alotau holdup

Two security guards from the Masurina Lodge in Alotau were shot by an armed man around 11:30am today outside the BSP bank.

An eyewitness who was stuck in the bank during the whole ordeal confirmed this with Loop PNG.

He said he saw everything from where he was standing in the bank.

During that time, he saw two suspects come out of a white 10-seater vehicle.

“The Alotau enterprises was trying to bank their money… I think they were trying to intercept that bank run,” said the eyewitness.

One armed man had a mask over his face and was holding a high-powered automatic weapon.

“I was in the bank and when I heard the shots. I turned around and I could see one of them with his weapon running around.

“One of them had body armour, camouflage like what the defence wear.”

It was revealed that after the shooting, Trobriand islanders retaliated and started throwing stones at the Alotau enterprise shops.

“So the police arrived in time to disperse the crowd but were too late to chase after the robbers,” said the eyewitness.

The two security guards have been rushed to hospital.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear whether money was actually taken by the suspects.
