Getaway Vehicle Involved in Accident

A high speed getaway by criminals ended in a nasty accident on Thursday with the driver of the stolen vehicle in serious condition at the Angau Memorial Hospital in Lae.

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said five suspects had held up occupants of a fifth element just outside the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium at around 4:30 pm and they made their getaway towards China Town and onto the backroad where they met their fate at Bumayong market.

Mr Wagambie said the incident was reported to a police patrol unit twenty minutes later by the victim. The patrol unit later alerted the Law police.

He said the vehicle over turned at the Bumayong market where two suspects fled on foot with weapons while three were apprehended including the driver who was seriously injured. The other two suspects were treated for minor injuries and later locked up by Police.

Mr Wagambie said the driver’s condition is being monitored with Police expected to formerly arrest and charge him soon.

The three apprehended suspects reside at West Taraka and Police believe that the vehicle was most likely stolen and was to be used to aid commit other serious crimes.

Mr Wagambie has now called on the community at Bumayong to cooperate with their local Police to give information so that the other suspects can be identified.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two suspects of a stolen motor vehicle used to hold up an expatriate missionary at Ampo Lutheran Church headquarters were arrested by Police on Tuesday

The Metropolitan Superintendent said a blue CRV was stolen about two weeks ago and hidden away.

He said it was then used to commit the crime at Ampo when the rascals followed the missionary who was driving a Toyota Landcruser into the church premises.

He said they attempted to hold up the missionary but were disturbed by residents.

Last week Thursday, a Police unit from Ramu Sugar was driving into Lae when they came across a vehicle fitting the description of the said CRV and intercepted when the vehicle ran off the road at Munum, just outside of Lae towards Nadzab airport.

The driver of the vehicle, who is from New Ireland has been questioned by Police detectives and he has since admitted to stealing the vehicle and using it in the commission of the crime the previous two days before he was caught. He will be formerly arrested and charged, along with the person who accompanied him.
