Fr Dumarinu seeks recount of judicial recount

Incumbent Central Bougainville MP, Fr Simon Dumarinu will be asking the National Court to order a recount into the judicial recount that ended in Buka last week.

His lawyers filed a motion before the same court to challenge the recount results, alleging there were errors.

He claims the recount results did not meet requirements of section 170 of the organic law.

That provision allows for the candidate with the second highest votes to request for a recount, if the number of votes does not exceed 0.25 percent of the number of votes,  polled by the candidate who collected the highest number of votes.

The matter returned before Justice Lawrence Kangwia for the court to ratify the results of the recount.

However Fr Dumarinu brought to the attention of the court the motion.

Justice Kangwia who will be in Goroka for another Election petition trial next week, adjourned the hearing, to a date that will be fixed later.

He issued directions for the Returning Officer involved in the recount to file his affidavit in reply, by next week Friday.

Fr Dumarinu remains MP, pending hearing of that motion seeking recount of the judicial recount, and further orders of the court.
