Escapee caught in Manus

Police in Manus have apprehended and arrested one of the two escapees who were sentenced over the murder of Irian Refugee Reza Barati at Manus Regional Processing Centre in 2014.

Loui Efi has been on the run since January 4 has been caught. His accomplice Joshua Kaluvia of West New Britain province remains at large.

The two prisoners were serving a sentence of three years when they escaped from the Correctional Service facility at Lorengau.

Efi escaped on 4 January this year while Kaluvia escaped on 18 February last year. He remains at large.

Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, has issued an appeal to the community to assist Police to provide informations on his whereabouts to Police so that he could be re-captured and put back behind bars.

He is also calling on information from the public if they have seen Kaluvia in the West New Britain province, to notify police.

Meantime, Police in Manus have arrested and charged a couple for Arson.

The couple, Paul Puuh and Siwa Sailas,  both aged 43 from Tingou and Bundrahi villages respectively.

They allegedly set fire to a semi-permanent house, belonging to a woman also from Tingou at ward 5 on 11 September last year.

Yapu said, the owner of the house was at work, when the couple set fire to her house. The motive of the incident is not known.

They are currently being locked up in Police cells and are expected to appear in court in January 26.
