Consultation on Draft Disability Authority Bill

The Consultation on Draft Disability Authority Bill was launched this week, and now opens up opportunity for input from relevant stakeholders, Persons with Disabilities and the wider community.

Minister for Religion and Community Development Soroi Eoe presided over the launching, saying the finalised draft of the Bill must capture the wider aspects of service delivery framework for Persons with Disabilities for a more inclusive society.

At the launching of the Consultation on Draft Disability Authority Bill 2018 in Port Moresby, Minister Eoe said the Authority Bill is a way forward for the Department of Community Development and Religion to pursue the global agenda of disability inclusiveness in development planning, budgeting and service delivery.

The Disability Authority Bill is currently in its working draft form.

Now the draft bill is open for comments and critiques from relevant stakeholders, Persons with Disabilities and the wider public to gauge, analyse and make relevant inclusion in the draft Bill.

Minister Eoe said the final draft should capture wider aspects of service delivery framework for its target population and break down barriers, make disability rights a reality in order that any society in PNG is inclusive.

The Minister highlighted a number of important and appropriate approaches for persons with disabilities, with the establishment of institutional and legal framework for the disability sector.

This includes breaking barriers that prevent Persons with Disabilities from enjoying equal rights to every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life; and advancing PwDs in economic empowerment.
