Coastal villages warned of strong winds

People living along the coast are warned to take precaution when going out to sea following strong winds causing rough seas.

The strong wind warning was issued by the PNG National Weather Service (PNGNWS) today.

The strong winds will affect all coastal waters of Southern PNG through Torres Strait, Kiwai Island and Kerema to waters of Samarai Island including Vanimo to Northern PNG.

PNGNWS assistant director Jimmy Gomoga said that strong winds are expected during the wet season especially along the southern coast of PNG and will continue into the New Year. 

Gomoga warned all small crafts and boats to take necessary precautions before going out to sea.

Coastal villagers are also warned to avoid traveling long distances by boat or dinghy and also going out fishing during this time of strong winds.

The weather office also reported that strong northwest winds of 25/34 knots are expected to continue for the next 24 hours causing rough seas.
