Bystanders injured in Gordon police shootout

Two people have been injured in a police shooting at Gordon’s market, Port Moresby, this morning.

Loop PNG caught up with the two injured bystanders, Rodney Mes and Augusta Bigade, while they were being treated at the Port Moresby General Hospital Emergency ward.

Mes said he and his young daughter were trying to get on a bus 4 when the shooting occurred, while Begade was trying to walk towards a shop adjacent to the bus stop when she was hit.

Mes was injured on his left hand while Bigade suffered wounds on her right cheek and right back area.

Both are still nursing their wounds at the Port Moresby General Hospital.

At around 11am today, police fired shots at the Gordon’s market bus stop, dispersing people.

Eyewitnesses say police, in a marked vehicle with registration number ZPD 238, looked like they were chasing vendors.

Officers at the Gordon’s Police Station confirmed that a shootout did occur but did not give any reason why.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Ben Turi, on the other hand said he had no knowledge of any shootout at Gordon’s this morning.

Attempts to get in touch with the Gordon’s Police Station Commander were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, police reports have been submitted at the Gordon’s Police Station.
