Gavamani Road in the National Capital District has been closed off by angry landowners from Mahuru, Kirakira and Sabama over uncertainty on the road works currently taking place in the area.
The roadblock begins in front of the Sabama market all the way to Mahuru.
The road was closed after an eviction notice had been served on a local woman living at the junction of Sabama-Pari intersection, to vacate her premises to allow for the road development to continue through.
There are also fears that the rest of the homes within the sphere of the road development may be removed, forcing locals to close the road until a proper explanation.
Rev. Hoge Rabura, Coordinator Justice & Social Issues Urban Region of the United Church, says there simply was a lack of consultation on the issue.
Recently elected Motu-Koita Assembly Chairman, Dadi Toka Jnr, and Council Members from Hanuabada, Elevala, Mahuru and Kirakira villages held a meeting today before a meeting with the NCD City Manager, Bernard Kipit.
Another meeting will be held tomorrow at 10am at Kirakira and Rev. Rabura is calling on Moresby South MP, Justin Tkatchenko, to also attend.
