Accident claims life of construction worker

Police in Manus have reported the death of a construction worker at the refugee camp site at ward 1 Lorengau town.

The incident occurred yesterday (Feb 28) at 11am at West Lorengau refugees’ camp site.

Manus provincial police commander, chief inspector David Yapu, said the deceased, from Morobe Province, was employed by NKW as an operator.

Yapu said the deceased was lifting up a big heavy duty power generator at the west side camp when the crane lost its balance to the left side and capsized, with the deceased trapped inside the cabin.

He tried to free himself and his other colleagues but without success.

“His body was finally retrieved at the scene and taken to Manus Provincial Hospital,” said Yapu.

The doctor confirmed upon arrival at the hospital that he died from loss of blood due to the severe wound he sustained on his left leg.

The body is in the morgue for autopsy and police are investigating the incident.

PPC Yapu said the situation at the refugee camp site is quiet and normal, with staff continuing with their work on site.

In another incident, a man from Wenai village, in the Bupi-Chupen-Lelemadih LLG was arrested and charged for sexual penetration of his sister-in-law.

The incident occurred on Feb 26 at Wenai village.

The accused, Salalau Ruben, aged 34, is now behind bars and will appear in court on Friday (March 2).
