Country’s economy shrinking: Kua

The country’s revenue has continued to grow over the last five years but expenditure has blown out so much that the economy is shrinking, claims Opposition stalwart Kerenga Kua.

He said there are more people without jobs in Port Moresby than five years ago and local and foreign companies have reduced their staff size or closed their doors completely.

“Despite all this, there is no reigning in of expenditure in the government’s 100 day plan. Taxes have gone up and the man on the street is expected to pay more because this government has overspent in the last six years.”

He calls on MPs not to support the upcoming supplementary budget as the government will have to get funds out of the provincial and social service allocations to fund its own livelihood and programs such as the ongoing APEC infrastructure in Port Moresby.

“For those that may have forgotten, there were very little returns in comparison to the blow out in expenditure on the 2015 Pacific Islands Games and same will happen in preparation for the 2018 APEC leaders’ meeting,” says Kua.
