Coastal waters: Strong wind warning issued

A renewal strong wind warning has been issued for all coastal waters of southern Papua New Guinea.

Strong winds will also affect Finschhafen and Siassi islands in Morobe Province, West New Britain, Manus and Bougainville.

The PNG National Weather Service (PNG NWS) issued the warning this morning, urging people to take extra precaution when going out to sea.

PNG NWS reports that strong southeast winds of 25/34 knots are expected to continue for the next 24 hours, causing rough seas and high wind waves.

Assistant director for PNG NWS, Jimmy Gomoga, explained that along the coastal areas, Vitiaz Strait and parts of the New Guinea Islands should be experiencing very strong trade winds during July.

Gomoga said it is very important that people should be aware of these warnings issued by the NWS.

He highlighted that currently, almost all coastal areas have been covered with strong wind warning.

Gomoga warned that the small dinghies are not fit to travel in this strong wind condition so they should remain ashore while small crafts should take extra precaution before going out to sea.
